HILLSIDE WORK-SCHOLARSHIP CONNECTION & ASPEN DENTAL TEAM UP TO PROVIDE DENTAL CARE FOR SYRACUSE-AREA STUDENTS
Aspen Dental Provides Free Services For Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection High School Students During “Love Your Smile Day”

02.16.2010 – As part of a new partnership with Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (HW-SC), dentists and hygienists at Aspen Dental provided a day of free dental services to more than 30 HW-SC high school students on Saturday, February 13. During “Love Your Smile Day,” Aspen Dental clinicians, along with dental hygiene students from SUNY Canton, provided students with x-rays, basic cleanings and fluoride treatments. The event was held at Aspen Dental’s Camillus office.

“We were thrilled with the incredible turnout and the positive response from our students and the generous contribution from Aspen Dental,” said Wayne O’Connor, executive director of Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection. “Not only do we work with our Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection students to improve academic success but we strive to help them achieve healthy habits leading to their overall well being.”

In addition to Saturday’s event, Aspen Dental recently provided the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection with a four-year, $50,000 grant to support their efforts in the Syracuse City School District. The donation was the latest effort in Aspen Dental’s Smile for Good corporate social responsibility initiative, which focuses on bringing smiles to the communities that Aspen Dental serves.

“Poor oral health and dental-related pain can negatively impact a student’s academic performance, distracting them from their studies or causing them to miss class altogether,” added Maureen Howes, RDH, director of hygiene services at Aspen Dental Management, Inc. “Providing access to high-quality, comprehensive oral care is a priority for Aspen Dental, so our team was happy to donate a day of free dental services to the HW-SC program.”

HW-SC is a nationally-recognized youth development program proven to double the graduation rates for at-risk youth. The cornerstone of its model are its school-based Youth Advocates, who serve as long-term mentors and liaisons to students and their families, linking students to individualized support services, employment training and on-the-job mentoring, academic tutoring, and year-round enrichment programs. HW-SC helps students develop good habits, achieve academic success, and become responsible young adults. Last year, HW-SC served 468 Syracuse City School District students in grades 7-12, with 89 percent of these students promoted to the next grade level.

Dental Office Magazine: Students-get-hands-on-experience-at-Aspen-Dental

SYRACUSE, New York–A group of 16 dental hygiene students from SUNY Canton recently spent a day Nov. 12, 2009, at Aspen Dental Management in Syracuse putting their classroom experience to practice.

The sophomore students toured ADMI’s denture lab, and learned the differences among types of dentures and how they are made.

“It was nice to be able to take all the terms we learn in our classes and see them in real-life situations,” said Alicia Harrington, who will graduate from SUNY Canton in May 2010.

Maureen Howes, director of hygiene services for Aspen Dental, spoke to the students about an oral cancer screening that uses chemiluminescent technology to detect oral cancer at its earliest stages.

Dr. Arwinder Judge, vice president of clinical support, also discussed the differences between amalgam and composite restorations.

“It’s important for our students to get some hands-on, outside-the-classroom learning,” said Pam Quinn, dental hygiene program director at SUNY Canton. “This is the second year we’ve brought students to Aspen Dental and we hope to continue bringing them in the future”

Where the Jobs Are:  Dental Work

National dentistry chains are growing, and they’re hiring on all levels.

The economic outlook may be grim, but people always need to get their teeth fixed. Some 40%of Americans don’t go to the dentist regularly, according to government studies. They’re likely to end up needing dentists more than anyone else, and retail dentistry operations are stepping into the breach.

Those operations are chains, including Aspen Dental, DentalOne and Heartland Dental Care, that are like the eyecare company Lenscrafters, only for teeth. They offer exams, X-rays, fillings and false teeth, often charging roughly 10% less than sole practitioners, who still make up the vast majority of American dentists. The retail chains are expanding, which is creating a lot of jobs.

Dental hygiene central to well-being

October has been declared National Dental Hygiene Month by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. This is an excellent opportunity to recognize the great work performed by dental hygienists every day and to focus on what we can do on a daily basis to achieve optimal oral health.

For many, hygienists are “the face” of the dental practice due to the important role they play in their patients’ oral health and overall well-being. In addition to delivering care, hygienists assist in the prevention and treatment of oral disease by educating patients on the relationship between oral health and systemic health. They work with patients to develop home care plans to maintain oral health. Hygienists also give advice on over-the-counter products, nutrition and smoking cessation.

National Dental Hygiene Month is a great time to start on the road to excellent oral health by committing to a dental hygiene routine. It takes just a few simple steps:

Brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

Floss at least once a day.

Limit consumption of soda, high sugar juices and sports drinks; drink more water in their place.

Limit intake of foods that are sticky or high in sugar.

Visit a dentist and hygienist twice a year, and be sure your visit includes an oral cancer exam; many dental practices offer state-of-the-art oral cancer screening tools that help dentists and hygienists identify abnormal tissue at its earliest stage.

Proper oral health is important for denture wearers, too. If you wear dentures be sure to brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque. And be sure to visit your dentist for an annual checkup.

By taking these steps, every month can be Dental Hygiene Month.

Letter to the Editor, Preventing Oral Cancer

In an effort to educate young athletes and their families on the importance of good oral health, the dangers of tobacco use, and the prevention of oral cancer, Aspen Dental is proud to be partnering with Oral Health America (OHA) to support OHA’s National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP) during the Little League Baseball World Series, Aug. 21-30, in Williamsport.

Youth education is particularly important because prevention and early detection are keys in fighting the battle against oral cancer. Certain risk factors such as family history and alcohol and tobacco use can contribute to the development of oral cancer, but nearly 25 percent of oral cancer patients have no known risk factors.

Tragically, this type of cancer is too often discovered late in development or when it has metastasized to another location. This doesn’t have to happen.

Oral cancer exams are part of routine dental exams. Advanced screening technologies detect oral cancer at its earliest stages. Prevention and early detection are keys in fighting the battle against oral cancer.

In addition to visiting your dentist twice a year for exams and cleaning, you can help minimize your risk for oral cancer through proper diet, use of sunscreen on lips, reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption, and avoiding high risk sexual behaviors.

Again, familiarize yourself with the risk factors and visit your dentist regularly for oral cancer screenings to help prevent this deadly disease. And be sure to talk with your children about the risks of using tobacco products.

Expanding Retailers Are Seeing Deals When it Comes to Negotiating With Reeling Landlords

But there are a few retailers that are continuing to expand. And these exceptions to the trend are finding it’s a buyer’s market both when it comes to cutting deals with landlords and hiring new staff….

Aspen Dental Incorporating Social Media – Featured in CNY Business Journal

Social-media technologies make their way into corporate training

By: Kevin Tampone

Social-media technologies have become a dominant cultural force so rapidly that it’s probably not surprising businesses and other organizations are integrating them into their operations in a variety of ways.

That includes learning, local education and training experts say. Social media are changing how businesspeople learn and how training professionals do their work.

The term social media often evokes images of Facebook and Twitter, but it includes other aspects as well. And many companies are using some or all of these outlets.

Blogs and wikis, for example, can be used to develop large, easily accessible repositories of company information and best practices, says Mark Britz, instructional-systems designer at Aspen Dental Management, Inc. in DeWitt…..
